Reversi

Outflank your opponent’s discs to flip them to your colour in this classic strategy game.

How to use: Tap a dotted square to place a dark disc. Any light discs trapped in a line between yours flip to dark.

How to play Reversi

Reversi is a two-player strategy board game played on an eight-by-eight board. You play the dark discs and the computer plays light. The game starts with four discs in the centre. On your turn you place a disc so that one or more of the computer’s discs are trapped in a straight line, across, down or diagonally, between your new disc and another of yours. All trapped discs flip to your colour.

Small dots show every legal move, so you never have to guess. If a player has no legal move they must pass, and the game ends when neither side can move. Whoever has more discs on the board wins. With a keyboard, click the board, move with the arrow keys and press Enter to place a disc. Undo takes back your last move.

Choose Easy, Normal or Hard. The harder levels look further ahead and value the key squares more. Corners are the most powerful squares because a disc there can never be flipped. The squares next to corners are risky, since they often hand the corner to your opponent.

Early on, having fewer discs but more possible moves is usually better than grabbing as many discs as you can.

Frequently asked questions

How do I flip discs?

Place a disc so that the opponent’s discs are trapped in a straight line between it and one of yours.

What if I cannot move?

You pass and the computer moves again. The game ends when neither side can move.

Why are corners so important?

A disc in a corner can never be flipped, and it helps you secure the edges.
