How to use the Unit Converter

Different countries use different measurement systems, so recipes, product specs, travel distances and fitness numbers often need converting. This converter handles the six categories people need most: length, weight, temperature, volume, speed and area.

Select a category, type the value, and choose the unit you are converting from and to. The answer appears at once, and a table underneath shows the same value in every other unit of that category, which is useful when you are not sure which unit you need. The swap button reverses the direction.

Most conversions multiply by a fixed factor. For example, one mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers and one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Temperature is different because the scales have different zero points: Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9/5 + 32, and Kelvin = Celsius + 273.15. The tool handles those formulas for you.

Volume units use the US customary system (US cups, pints, quarts and gallons), which differ from the imperial units used in the UK; an imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon. Check which system your recipe or product uses. Results are shown to ten significant digits and switch to scientific notation for extremely large or small values.
