How to use the Word Counter

Writers, students and marketers often have a word limit to meet. Paste or type into the box and the counter updates as you go, with no button to press and no limit on length.

Words are counted as groups of characters separated by spaces, so hyphenated terms such as “well-known” count as one word, matching the convention used by most word processors. The tool also reports characters with and without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines.

Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of about 238 words per minute, and speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, which is helpful for planning a presentation or a podcast script. The “most used words” list skips common filler words and highlights the terms you repeat most, helping you spot overused words or check keyword emphasis in a web page.

For school essays, check your assignment’s rules, because some teachers exclude the title, headings or bibliography from the count. For search-friendly articles, quality matters more than hitting a specific number, but long, well-organised pages often rank for more topics. Your text never leaves your browser, so you can safely check private drafts.
