How to play Snake

Snake is one of the most famous arcade games ever made. You steer a growing snake around a square board, collecting food. Each piece you eat makes the snake longer and adds a point. The game ends if the snake runs into a wall or into its own body.

Press an arrow key or W, A, S and D to start moving and to change direction. On a phone, swipe across the board or use the on-screen arrows. The space bar pauses the game. You cannot reverse straight into yourself, so plan turns a few squares ahead. Pick a speed from slow, normal or fast; faster speeds make the game harder but are the same rules. Your best score is saved in this browser.

Good players keep the snake in long, sweeping patterns, such as zig-zagging across the board, so there is always an empty path available. Try not to trap yourself in a corner when the snake becomes long, and avoid chasing food in a way that leaves no escape route. When the snake fills the whole board, you win.

This version runs on an HTML canvas with no downloads, and the board scales to fit small screens. It is a nice way to practise quick decisions and planning at the same time.
