How to play 2048
2048 is a sliding-tile puzzle played on a four-by-four grid. Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in the direction you choose. When two tiles with the same number collide they merge into one tile with double the value, and your score increases by the new tile’s value.
Use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D on a keyboard, swipe on a touch screen, or tap the on-screen arrows. After every successful move a new tile, usually a 2 and sometimes a 4, appears in a random empty square. The game ends when the board is full and no moves remain. Your best score is remembered in this browser.
A popular strategy is to keep your largest tile in one corner and build a chain of descending numbers along the edge next to it. Avoid moving in the direction that would pull the big tile out of the corner, and use a fourth direction only when you have no other choice. Look for merges that open up space rather than just chasing points.
Reaching 2048 is not the end: you can keep playing to build 4096 and beyond. The game runs fully in your browser, with no downloads and no sign-up. Take short breaks, because spotting patterns gets easier when you come back with fresh eyes.
