How to play Minesweeper

Minesweeper is a logic game in which mines are hidden beneath a grid of squares. Your task is to reveal every square that does not contain a mine. Clicking a square uncovers it. A number shows how many of the eight surrounding squares hold mines, and a blank square automatically opens its neighbours.

Choose beginner (9×9 with 10 mines), intermediate (16×16 with 40) or expert (16×30 with 99). Your first click is always safe, and so are its neighbours, so you will never lose on the opening move. Right-click a square to place a flag where you think a mine is. On a touch screen, switch on flag mode and tap to plant or remove flags. The counter shows mines minus flags, and the timer starts on your first click.

Use the numbers to deduce what is hidden. If a “1” already has one flag next to it, all its other neighbours are safe. If a “1” has exactly one hidden neighbour, that square is a mine. Comparing two neighbouring numbers often reveals extra mines or safe squares. Guess only when logic runs out, and pick the square with the lowest chance of being a mine.

Win by uncovering every safe square. If you hit a mine, all the mines are revealed and you can start a new game at any time.

How do I place a flag on a phone?

Turn on flag mode with the button, then tap squares to flag or unflag them.

What do the numbers mean?
