Slug Generator

Convert any title into a clean, SEO-friendly URL slug.

How to use: Type or paste a title to get a clean, web-friendly URL slug you can copy.

How to use the Slug Generator

A slug is the readable last part of a web address, such as /how-to-bake-sourdough. Clean slugs help visitors understand a link at a glance and give search engines a clue about the page topic.

Type or paste a title into the box. The generator removes accents and special characters, replaces spaces and punctuation with your chosen separator, and collapses repeated separators. “Café & Crème Brûlée!” becomes “cafe-and-creme-brulee”. Hyphens are the usual recommendation for URLs because search engines treat them as word separators, while underscores are better kept for file names and code.

Switch on stop-word removal to drop filler words such as “the”, “of” and “and” for shorter links. If you set a maximum length, the slug is trimmed at the last whole word that fits. Enter several titles, one per line, to produce many slugs at once.

Good slugs are short, descriptive and stable. Avoid dates and numbers that will become outdated, and once a page is published, do not change its slug without setting up a redirect, because old links and search rankings depend on it. Everything is generated locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators but may read underscores as joining words together.

How long should a slug be?

Aim for three to six meaningful words. Shorter slugs are easier to read and share.

Can I change a slug after publishing?

You can, but set up a 301 redirect from the old address so you do not lose visitors or search ranking.
