How to use the Speech to Text
Most people speak three times faster than they type, which makes dictation ideal for drafts, notes, messages and long emails, and essential for anyone who finds typing painful. This tool uses the speech recognition built into your browser to turn your voice into text as you talk.
Choose the language and accent you will speak, press Start dictation and allow microphone access. Speak naturally in full sentences; grey preview text shows what is being recognised and becomes final when you pause. With spoken punctuation on, say “comma”, “full stop” or “period”, “question mark”, “new line” or “new paragraph”. Sentences are capitalised automatically.
Keep listening restarts recognition after silences, so you can think between sentences. You can edit the text box at any time, and new speech is added at the end. When you are finished, copy the text, download it as a .txt file or clear it to start again.
Speech recognition is available in Chrome, Edge and Safari, but not yet in Firefox. In Chrome and Edge the audio is processed by the browser maker’s speech service, so an internet connection is needed. The text itself is not sent to this website.
