How to use the Number to Words Converter
Writing an amount in words is required on cheques, invoices, contracts and legal documents because words are harder to alter than digits. This tool turns any number into correct English words.
Type a number, with or without commas. Whole numbers are spelled out with hyphens for compound numbers, such as “forty-two”, and standard scale words from thousand to decillion, so 1,205 becomes “one thousand two hundred five”. Decimals are read digit by digit after the word “point”, as in “three point one four”. Negative numbers begin with “minus”.
Switch on currency style to read the decimals as a subunit: 1250.75 becomes “one thousand two hundred fifty dollars and seventy-five cents”. You can change the currency and subunit names to pounds and pence, euros and cents, or anything else. The tool picks the singular form automatically when the value is exactly one.
This version uses the American convention of omitting “and” within a number, while some regions say “one hundred and five”. Short-scale names are used, so a billion is a thousand million. For very large values the tool accepts up to 36 digits and keeps full precision because the number is handled as text, not as a floating-point value.
