Image to Text (OCR)
Turn screenshots, photos and scans into editable text with private, in-browser OCR.
How to use: Choose or drop an image that contains printed text. The OCR engine reads it and the text appears below, ready to copy or download as a .txt file.
Uses the open-source Tesseract OCR engine (Tesseract.js, Apache-2.0) with an English model. About 7 MB downloads once, then it is cached. Printed English text works best.
How to use the Image to Text (OCR)
Optical character recognition, or OCR, turns a picture of text into real text you can edit, search and paste. It saves retyping a receipt, a page from a book, a slide in a screenshot or a sign you photographed.
Choose or drop an image and recognition starts automatically. The first time, your browser downloads the open-source Tesseract engine and an English language model (about 7 MB together); they are then cached, so later scans start quickly. A progress bar shows each stage. When it finishes, the text appears next to your image with a word count and an average confidence score.
For the best results, use a sharp, well-lit image where the text is straight and fills most of the picture. Screenshots and scans usually read almost perfectly. For phone photos, keep “Enhance contrast” ticked, which converts the image to high-contrast greyscale first. Tick “Join lines into paragraphs” to remove the line breaks from narrow columns.
OCR is never perfect: always check names, numbers and unusual words. Handwriting, decorative fonts and very small text are difficult. Everything runs in your browser, so private documents such as bank letters or IDs are not sent to any server.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded?
No. The OCR engine runs entirely in your browser and the image stays on your device.
Which languages are supported?
This version includes the English model. Text in other Latin-script languages may partly work, but accents can be misread.
Can it read handwriting?
Only very neat handwriting, and often poorly. Tesseract is designed for printed text.
