Fuel Cost Calculator

Find out what a road trip will cost in fuel and split it fairly.

How to use: Enter the distance, your car’s fuel economy and the fuel price, choosing the units you use. Tick round trip and set the number of people to split the cost.

How to use the Fuel Cost Calculator

Before a road trip, a commute change or a car-share arrangement, it helps to know what the fuel will cost. This calculator handles the confusing mix of units used around the world, so you can enter your car’s figures exactly as they appear on the dashboard or spec sheet.

Type the one-way distance in kilometres or miles. Enter your car’s fuel economy in litres per 100 km (common in Europe, Canada and Australia), miles per gallon using US or UK gallons, or kilometres per litre (common in Asia and Latin America). Then enter the fuel price per litre, US gallon or UK gallon. A UK gallon is about 20 percent bigger than a US gallon, so choosing the right one matters.

The calculator shows the total fuel cost, the fuel needed, the cost per kilometre or mile and your economy converted to L/100 km. Tick round trip to double the distance, and enter the number of people sharing to see the cost per person, ideal for splitting with friends.

Real-world economy depends on speed, traffic, load, air conditioning and hills, so add a margin for long trips. The same maths works for petrol, diesel or LPG. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my car’s fuel economy?

Check the trip computer, the manual or an official rating site. Or fill the tank, note the distance driven and divide.

What is the difference between US and UK MPG?

A UK gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon is 3.785 litres, so the same car shows a higher MPG figure in the UK.

Can I use it for electric cars?

Not directly. It is designed for liquid fuels measured in litres or gallons.
