Tip Calculator

Work out the tip and each person’s share of the bill quickly.

How to use: Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people to see each person’s share.

How to use the Tip Calculator

A tip is a thank-you for good service, and the customary amount depends on the country. In North America 15% to 20% is typical in restaurants, while in many other places a smaller tip or a service charge is normal.

Enter the bill total, tap a quick percentage button or type your own, and tell the calculator how many people are sharing. It shows the total tip, the tip per person, the final total and what each person pays. If you add up a fixed number of guests, the per-person figure saves arguments at the table.

Tick the rounding option if you prefer to pay a neat whole amount each. The calculator rounds each share up and increases the tip slightly to match, so nobody is short.

Decide whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, and you can enter that figure as the bill. Check whether a service charge has already been included on your receipt before adding more. The tool works with any currency because it only multiplies and divides.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

It varies by country and service. In the United States and Canada 18% to 20% is common at sit-down restaurants; elsewhere 5% to 10% or rounding up is typical.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common and slightly cheaper.

Can I split unevenly?

This tool splits equally. For uneven shares, run the calculator separately for each person’s portion of the bill.
