How to use the Typing Speed Test
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). By convention a “word” is five characters, including spaces, so the measure is fair no matter how long the actual words are. This test also reports accuracy, because fast typing with many errors is not useful.
Choose a duration of 30 seconds, one minute or two minutes, then click the text box and start typing the passage shown. The timer begins with your first key press. Letters turn green when correct and red when wrong, and a live WPM counter updates as you type. When time is up, or you finish the passage, you will see your net speed (counting only correct characters), raw speed, accuracy, mistakes and a skill level from beginner to expert.
The average adult types about 40 words per minute, while professional typists often exceed 70 or 80. To improve, focus on accuracy first, because speed follows naturally once your fingers know where the keys are. Keep your eyes on the screen, rest your fingers on the home row, and use all ten fingers. Short daily practice of ten minutes beats a long weekly session.
Passages are original text, picked at random. Results are not saved or uploaded, so feel free to practise as often as you like. Try again after a break and compare your scores.
