How to use the Math Speed Challenge

Mental arithmetic keeps your number skills sharp and helps in daily life, from checking a bill to estimating a discount. This challenge gives you one minute to solve as many problems as possible.

Pick a level. Easy uses addition and subtraction with numbers up to 20. Medium adds multiplication with factors up to 12 and larger addition and subtraction. Hard includes division and bigger numbers. Press Start, type your answer and press Enter to submit. If you get one wrong, the correct answer is shown briefly and a new problem appears. When the timer ends you will see your correct answers, wrong answers, accuracy and your personal best.

To speed up, learn multiplication tables until they are automatic, and use shortcuts. To add 49, add 50 and subtract 1. To multiply by 5, multiply by 10 and halve. To subtract, count up from the smaller number. Round numbers to the nearest ten, adjust, and then correct. Accuracy matters as much as speed, so avoid guessing.

Problems are generated randomly, always with whole-number answers and never negative results. The game is suitable for children learning arithmetic and for adults who want a brain warm-up. Scores are stored only in your browser.
